I Found My Voice

I Found My Voice

David started coming to GAMMA meetings after separating from his wife of thirty-five years.  More than he realizes in telling his story, he is a strong contributor to meeting and continues to take positive steps to move forward in his life.  Here is his story:

Picture
I heard about GAMMA and realized I could make a meeting that same week.  There wasn't a lot of hesitation, I was coming to terms with my sexuality and my situation as a man separated from my wife of thirty-five years.  I'd been in counseling, seen some benefit but needed more that an extended bi-weekly session.

I got to the meeting and just walked in.  I learned later that men sometimes walk around the block before making the decision to enter or depart.  I found a comfortable room, average guys who were open and caring -- just like me.  I also found my voice.  It struck me as very different that I was sitting in a place with men who were willing to accept me just as I was, where I no longer needed to conceal my feelings, my attractions, my thoughts or my reactions.

After thirty years of hiding, denying, guarding my every move I was utterly free to be myself without shame, apology or fear.  I cannot begin to describe the relief I felt to be in a place where that was possible.  GAMMA has taught me to be myself, accept myself, enjoy myself and there have been some good laughs along the way.

I still have a long way to go and lessons to learn; I also have a lot to give back.  I attend when I can, contribute what I can and always learn from the directions and decisions of others who share the journey with me.
